About the Event
Portland-Lviv New Europe Book Club is honored to present a conversation with Artem Chapeye, author of The Ukraine and Ordinary People Don’t Carry Machine Guns, in partnership with WorldOregon.
Chapeye’s work brings readers close to the lived experience of Ukraine through ordinary people, intimate moments, moral uncertainty, humor, tenderness, and the pressures of war. Writing from the intersection of literature, witness, and war, he asks readers to look beyond abstraction and encounter Ukraine through human stories.
We will discuss The Ukraine, a collection that moves between fiction and creative nonfiction, and Ordinary People Don’t Carry Machine Guns, a candid reflection on war, pacifism, responsibility, and the choices people face when their country is under attack.
Reading both books is encouraged, but not required. All are welcome to join the conversation.
